Submissions Sorry, kids. THE AGENCY IS CLOSED TO SUBMISSIONS with these few exceptions: (1) If an editor from a traditional publishing house* has offered to buy your manuscript and you need representation, you can query, but I don’t guarantee representation. A sure sale isn't enough for me. Yes, really. Did I mention I have my psychiatrist on speed dial? *a publishing house that pays an advance of at least $1,000.00, as required to be a member of RWA’s PAN. (2) If you have an appointment with me at a conference, I'll listen to your pitch, and may ask for a partial. See the Conferences page (link at the bottom of the page) for details. Note: Only make an appointment to pitch if you have a COMPLETED manuscript. You have six (6) months from the time I make the request to send the material. Thanks! (3) If I've invited you to submit or resubmit. (4) Every month I'll draw a set of initials out of a bag, at random, and post them somewhere on the "Boo-Yahs!" page at www.mortimerliterary.com . If the initials match yours, you can query any time in that month. Note: Have to be your initials in the correct order (first name, last name), or the initials of your pseudonym. Please don’t e-mail to ask if any other combination of initials qualify! (5) If a best-selling author of note, or an existing client recommends you, you can query. The author needs to give me a "heads-up." Note: As for my clients, they have to OFFER to recommend you. Please don’t hound my clients or I’ll haveta hurt ya. (6) If you final in a contest I'm judging, I may ask to see more of your manuscript.

How to Query: Mortimer Literary accepts e-mail queries exclusively. No snail-mail queries! Explain in the first paragraph of your query which of the above gives you an invitation to query. Send your one-page query letter (if the above describes your situation) as an attachment to: Please type: Query / (the title of your manuscript) on the subject line of your e-mail. If you don't, and half of you don't, I have to open numerous e-mails to find your submission. This makes the agent cranky before she reads your submission. Bad writer! Bad! Please don’t send unsolicited pages, partials, synopses, or full manuscripts, as my itchy trigger finger will hit the delete button (or go for file 13) faster than I can nag my husband, and I'm a thoroughbred. I don't wanna be a meanie, but I only have time to read the submissions I've requested. Who am I kidding? I don't even have time to read those. Approximate Response Times (Monday thru Friday): (Depends on the workload from my clients, who always come first) Queries: 1-2 business days Partials: 4 weeks Full manuscripts/100-page Requests: 2-3 months These response times are approximate. I hope to answer sooner than later. If any of these deadlines pass and you haven't heard from me, please feel free to check on your submission by e-mail or phone (I prefer e-mail). No, I won't think you're a bother. I understand how hard waiting is. Take into account that if your submission is acknowledged on a holiday, Saturday, or Sunday, it’ll be logged in the next business day. You'll get a response within 48 hours (Monday thru Friday) that I've received your submission, or the e-mail gremlins ate it, and you should contact me for verification. If I request your full manuscript/100 pages, and you'd like me to return them, send a SASE with the proper postage. Note: Your manuscript may have edits on some pages. Acquisitions List: Category/Series (taken on a Letter of Intent*) Contemporary Romantic Comedy Historical Romance Inspirational: Single Title or Category/Series (except Romantic Suspense/Cozy Mysteries) Paranormal Romance/Time Travel Historical Fiction Thrillers/Suspense (including military) Women's Fiction YA/Middle Grade Non-Fiction *Every category writer knows there’s only one market, so if the manuscript doesn't sell, there’s nowhere else to go. My Letter of Intent states I’ll try to sell your manuscript to Harlequin, but if I can’t, we part ways. If I can, I’ll sign you. I know, but it’s better than goin’ in naked! Not looking for at this time:
